House M.D. is a medical drama created by David Shore on the Fox network. it features a team of doctors at the Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital in New Jersey. the main cast changes from season to season, but the focus of the show is the titular character, Gregory House, played by British actor Hugh Laurie.

the show is in part based on Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes series. House is an analogue of Holmes, Wilson is an analogue of Watson. the first epsidoe contains a reference to the Sherlock Holmes character Irene Adler.

House has seen a resurgence of popularity in the early 2020s with a slew of memes and jokes about the shows. "More Mouse Bites" and "Freak Hospital" are some of my favorites.

my relationship with this show is complicated. i watched it at a very formative time in my life, when i was around 14 years old. it made me want to become a doctor. when i rewatched some of it in college, it made me want to become a medical physicist. maybe making important career decisions based on a tv show isn't a great idea, but it influenced me nonetheless.

the show's handling of trans characters in particular is not good. there is frequent use of transphobic slurs and one episode featured house harrassing an underage intersex girl. despite the show's regressive portrayals of trans and intersex people, communities on Tumblr have reclaimed the show, in a way, reframing house and the team as LGBTQIA+ allies. really coool to see.
